Each year, thousands of volunteers donate their time to build and renovate houses and support Habitat ReStore. Volunteer service saves more than an estimated $1.2 million in labor costs each year; this helps keep the purchase price of houses affordable for potential home buyers in need of quality, affordable housing

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why must I register to volunteer?
    Registration helps us better plan and utilize resources efficiently. We coordinate building supplies and schedules based on volunteer numbers. Plus, registration completes your release waiver which we’re required to have on file.
  • How do I register?
    Registration is done online. First, create an account with a username and password. Then, login to volunteer calendar with your username and password to select from volunteer opportunities.
  • Can I register a group?
    There is no group registration, however you can work together. Just ask each person in your group to reserve their spot at the same time and location.

    Volunteer spots are available first-come first-serve for up to 25 people per day, per site.
  • Is construction experience required?
    No, our site leaders lead you in construction tasks. A safety speech is presented on-site to inform all volunteers of the risks and precautions they may encounter that day.
  • What construction tasks will I do?
    Volunteers assist with framing, insulation, trim, landscaping, punch list items, and cleaning.
  • What ReStore tasks will I do?
    Volunteers assist with unloading and organizing merchandise, and cleaning.
  • What time do I need to be onsite?
    Construction Volunteers – 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM
    Habitat Restore Volunteers – 8:00 AM to 12:30 PM or 12:30 PM to 5:00 PM
  • What should I wear?
    Wear weather appropriate attire and closed-toe shoes (mandatory). No large earrings or jewelry, please. Be prepared to get a little dirty!
  • What should I bring?
    Lunch and/or snacks. Please bring your own lunch. Most sites take lunch breaks around 11:30 am.

    Habitat Birmingham does not provide any food. However, bottled water is available.
  • Do I need to bring tools?
    No. All the necessary tools and equipment are provided. If you’d like to bring your own, please make sure they are clearly labeled. Habitat Birmingham is not responsible for lost or damaged tools.
  • What if it rains?
    Construction continues rain or shine!

    It’s rare a construction day is cancelled due to weather (it’s just too unpredictable!). However, if there is a cancellation, and you’ve registered online, you’ll receive notice as far in advance as possible. Volunteers are asked to use their best judgement regarding severe weather.
  • Will I have access to a bathroom?
    Portable bathrooms are available at each construction site.
  • Age restrictions for volunteers?
    Volunteers must be 14+
    14 to 18 – No power tools and limited construction activities, plus parental consent required
  • Are there coolers onsite?
    Habitat Birmingham does not provide coolers. Volunteers are welcome to bring their own cooler.
  • What parking is available?
    Typically, street parking is available. However, parking is often limited. Please consider carpooling. Please do not block driveways or mailboxes.
  • Can I volunteer to fulfill Court Appointed Community Service?
